Tips for New Hot Tub Owners

Buying your first hot tub is always very exciting! Everyone in your household will look forward to lazy summer nights relaxing outside, or maybe even a peaceful winter night in the warm water. Whether you’re hoping to entertain family and friends or simply indulge yourself, a hot tub is a great outdoor accessory that can be used all year round!

As you’ve probably already discovered, to ensure your hot tub remains clean and prepared for whenever you want it, some loving care is required. Here, we’ve put together some basic things to be aware of if you’re running a hot tub for the first time.

Placing Your Hot Tub

Where you put your hot tub in your outdoor space can be vitally important. First of all, the location obviously has to be flat. It should also be a solid foundation that can withstand the weight and any water that might spill over. For this reason, most people don’t place hot tubs directly on grass – hot tub flooring is available if you don’t want to build an extension.

You may wish to place your hot tub in an area that can receive power, as a mains connection will be required for the pumps, although solutions can allow this to reach pretty much anywhere.

A quiet spot away from potential onlookers may be another consideration. At the same time, you may also want a location that is easily accessed, considering you may want to use it in the winter and may not fancy a longer walk from your home!

Stay on Top of Chemical Balance

The water quality is one of the most important things when it comes to hot tubs. If you can keep your hot tub’s chemical balance in check, you’ll drastically reduce the number of issues that arise.

There are many chemicals to keep on top of, such as chlorine, so do your research and make sure you have everything you might need before filling your hot tub. For more advice, check out our in-depth guide below.

Get a High-Quality Cover

Most hot tubs will come with a dedicated cover, but if not, you need to make sure you buy a good one as soon as possible. Having a quality cover not only protects the hot tub and water from the elements but also helps the tub retain its heat, saving you money.

Your hot tub should remain covered while not in use. The only exception is after adding chemicals, when the hot tub should be allowed to release any gases before the cover is replaced.

If your chemical balance is off, the inside of the cover is more likely to wear over time, so making sure it’s kept clean and cared for is essential.

Care for Your Filters

The majority of hot tubs will use cartridge filters, which appears like a tube of sheets of paper. These filters are usually simple to use – the pumps will take care of most of the work – but every so often, they will need specialist cleaning.

Hosing down your cartridge filters daily or whenever in use is a good habit that will increase their effectivity and longevity. Every week or so, you should perform a deeper clean with a specialist filter cleaner. Keeping this habit should allow your cartridge filter to effectively clean your hot tub water for a year, sometimes even longer, before needing to be replaced entirely.

Cleaning Your Hot Tub

This point is probably the most important for new hot tub owners, but its answer is quite complicated. Given the various ways which hot tubs can get dirty, the cleaning required can vary.

As mentioned before, if you keep your water chemicals in check, your water should remain clean. However, marks may still appear at the waterline, due to body oils and other substances. These can be cleaned with a cloth or specialist hot tub cleaner.

If there’s debris in your hot tub, a skimmer of spa vacuum can easily do the trick. You should look to completely replace the water in your hot tub every few months, which will allow you to perform a more in-depth inspection and clean anywhere that might otherwise go amiss.
