Pick Your Countries

The Olympic Games date back thousands of years and involves people from all over the world. Nowadays, the event is as much about international culture as sporting achievement.

This year’s event takes place in Tokyo, so you could take inspiration from Japanese culture for your tournament. You can also draw countries to represent out of a hat to get into the Olympic spirit.

Having different countries involved is a great excuse to have themed food and drink for your summer party. It can also be a way to teach young children about different countries and cultures.

Try Olympic-Themed Pool Games

Of course, no summer pool party would be complete without some swimming pool games! We’ve picked some of our favourite ideas taken from this year’s Games.

Swimming Races

Swimming is a huge part of the modern Olympics! You don’t need an Olympic-sized pool to join in the fun - just check out these ideas:

  • - Sprint races - swim from one end to the other!
  • - Marathon - see how many laps you can swim without stopping!
  • - Time trial - for smaller pools, take turns and time each other’s efforts!

You can also try different swimming techniques to level the playing field.

Water Polo

Water polo is a hugely popular sport across Europe. It’s really easy to play, all you need is two teams, two goals and a small (hand-sized) floaty ball. It’s similar to basketball or football - simply throw the ball into the opponent’s goal!

Volleyball

In the Olympics, volleyball is played indoors or outdoors on a beach. However, who’s to say it can’t be a pool-based event in your homegrown Games?

It’s easy to find swimming pool nets that float on the water. Just add an inflatable and you have everything you need for a fun game of water volleyball!

Artistic Swimming

If you’re after some laughs, why not try to recreate an artistic swimming performance? Get into teams, pick a song and try to stay in sync!

Canoe Slalom

If you have a big enough pool, you can add the canoe slalom to your list of Olympic activities!

Of course, you’re unlikely to have space for a full canoe. For a fun party game, people can use rubber rings and race to different parts of the pool in record time!

Create a Medal Table, or Just Play for Fun!

If you want to commit to an Olympic tournament, you can keep track of scores and award medals at the end of the day. Alternatively, just play for fun and enjoy a summer around the pool!
