Why choose an inverter heat pump?
A standard on/off heat pump only has one speed, flat out. It runs at full power until the pool is warm, switches off, then starts again from cold when the temperature drops. An inverter heat pump works more like a car on cruise control. It runs hard to warm the pool, then eases off and holds the temperature at low power. The benefits are:
- Lower running costs. A heat pump is most efficient at part load. At half output, the Orilux AXS reaches a COP of around 10 to 11 in warm weather, and the Orilux XP over 14.
- Much quieter. At low power, a good inverter runs at around 40 dB(A) at a metre away, about the same as a quiet fridge. Your neighbours will thank you.
- Steadier water temperature. No more peaks and dips.
- No start-up surge. Inverters soft-start, which is easier on your electrics and the compressor.

Orilux AXS or Orilux XP?
Both are full inverter heat pumps with titanium heat exchangers, Turbo, Smart and Silence modes, and Wi-Fi control. The main differences are:
- The Orilux AXS uses R32 refrigerant and a Mitsubishi twin-rotary compressor. It heats down to -10°C, comes in five sizes from 12.6 kW to 24.4 kW for pools of 41-110 m³, and carries a 10 year warranty on the compressor and heat exchanger.
- The Orilux XP R290 uses natural R290 refrigerant with a GWP of just 0.02. It heats down to -20°C, has a 130% Turbo mode, and comes in 21.7 kW and 26.6 kW for pools of 55-105 m³. Choose it for larger pools, long seasons, or the lowest environmental impact.

Investing in an Inverter Pool Heat Pump
An inverter usually costs more to buy than an on/off heat pump, but it costs noticeably less to run every year, and it's far quieter. For most UK pools, especially if you swim in spring and autumn, the savings cover the difference within a few seasons. Look after it, and a good heat pump should last well over ten years. Finish the job properly
