About the Certikin CUV
Green water is almost always caused by single-celled algae, and the CUV deals with it at the source. As water passes through the unit, a UV-C bulb kills the algae before it can multiply, so your pool stays clear and sparkling without you reaching for algaecide every week.
It also tackles chloramines. These form when chlorine reacts with the sweat and other waste swimmers bring into the pool, and they're what cause red eyes, itchy skin and that strong "swimming pool" smell. UV-C breaks them down, so you can run the pool at a lower chlorine level and still keep the water safe.
Certikin designed the inside of the CUV so water flows evenly past the bulb, giving the UV light the best chance to work. The body is made from HDPE, which reflects UV well and is fully UV stabilised, and the translucent ends glow when the bulb is on, so you can tell at a glance it's working. A low-energy electronic ballast powers the bulb, with thermal overload protection built in.
It's easy to look after. The bulb, quartz sleeve and control box can all be replaced, and you can change the bulb without draining the unit. The control box sits on a bracket, and stainless steel mounting brackets let you fix the CUV to the wall horizontally or vertically. Water can flow through in either direction.

For the best results, Certikin recommend that your whole pool volume passes through the UV every 4 to 8 hours. The slower the flow, the stronger the UV dose. A UV unit works alongside your chlorine or bromine, not instead of it.
Replacement bulbs and quartz sleeves
A UV-C bulb keeps glowing long after it stops doing its job, because the UV output fades over time even though you can still see light. Certikin rate the bulb at 9,000 hours, which is about 12 months if your pump runs around the clock, or roughly two seasons if you only run it in summer. Replace it at that point, even if it still lights up.
Certikin also recommend changing the quartz sleeve at the same time. In between, clean the sleeve two or three times a season, as any scale or dirt on it blocks the UV light. In hard water areas, vinegar or a cold water descaler will shift limescale.
Installation tips
- Fit the CUV on the return line after the filter, and before any salt chlorinator or chlorine feeder.
- Leave enough room at one end to slide the bulb and quartz sleeve out.
- Wire it so it switches on and off with your pump, so it never runs dry.
- A bypass isn't essential, as the bulb can be changed without draining the unit. However, a simple bypass with double union ball valves makes cleaning the quartz sleeve much easier. We'd recommend one.
- We also recommend fitting a UV strainer to protect the quartz sleeve.
- Never close a valve after the UV while the pump is running.
- Protect the unit from frost, or drain it and bring it indoors over winter.
Warranty
Comes with 2 years manufacturer's warranty. The bulb and quartz sleeve are service items, so they aren't covered. The unit must be installed by a qualified electrician, and water damage from badly fitted O-rings or sleeves isn't covered. Keep your proof of purchase.
Frequently asked questions
Which Certikin UV do I need?
Match the unit to your pool volume and your pump's flow rate. The 25W suits pools up to 25 m³, the 30W up to 30 m³, the 55W up to 55 m³ and the 75W up to 75 m³. Make sure your pump doesn't push more water through than the unit's maximum flow. If it does, go up a size.
Do I still need chlorine with a UV system?
Yes. UV only treats the water while it's passing through the unit, so you still need a residual of chlorine or bromine in the pool. The difference is you'll need a lot less of it.
How often should I change the bulb?
Every 9,000 hours, which is about 12 months of 24-hour running. Change the quartz sleeve at the same time. The bulb will still light up after that, but its UV output will have dropped too far to work properly.
Can I use it with a salt chlorinator?
Yes. The CUV body won't corrode in salt water, but Certikin note that the stainless steel mounting brackets can, so use plastic fixings on a salt system. Fit the UV before the salt cell.
How long should I run the UV each day?
Run it whenever your pump runs. The easiest way to do that is to wire it so it switches on and off with the pump.
My pool has gone green again. What's wrong?
Usually the quartz sleeve needs cleaning, or the bulb is past its 9,000 hours. Also check the unit is the right size, your filter is clean and your chemical levels are right. If you're still stuck, call our tech team.
Can I use it on a hot tub?
We don't recommend it for water above 30°C, as the heat reduces the UV output.
