AFM Activated Filter Media for Swimming Pools
AFM® (Activated Filter Media) is a direct replacement for sand in any swimming pool filter, doubling the performance without requiring infrastructure modifications. Engineered with a unique 3-step activation process, AFM® significantly enhances filtration efficiency, eliminates biofilm, and provides crystal-clear, healthier water with minimal maintenance.
Developed by Dr. Howard Dryden, AFM® is manufactured in a state-of-the-art hygienic facility and designed to outperform all other filtration media, offering longer-lasting, self-sterilising filtration for both residential and commercial applications.
Why Choose AFM Filter Media For Your Swimming Pool?
Superior Filtration Efficiency:
- Removes 95% of particles down to 1 micron (compared to 20-25 microns with sand or glass)
- 300 times more surface area than traditional sand for superior adsorption
- Self-sterilizing surface prevents biofilm growth, mud-balling, and wormhole channeling
Healthier & Safer Water:
- Blocks Cryptosporidium & Giardia, reducing pathogen risks
- Prevents bacterial growth, unlike sand filters that incubate bacteria
- Lowers THM concentrations, reducing exposure to harmful disinfection by-products
Eco-Friendly & Cost-Effective:
- Up to 50% reduction in chlorine demand
- Cuts backwash water consumption by an average of 50%
- Never needs replacement, lasts the lifetime of the filtration system
Removes Heavy Metals & Organic Pollutants:
- Strong negative zeta potential attracts and removes sub-micron particles
- Effectively eliminates metals and heavy metals from water
How Does AFM Activated Filter Media Work?
AFM® is manufactured using a special type of green and brown glass, carefully processed for optimal particle size, shape, and chemical structure. The media undergoes a three-stage activation process, increasing its surface area and creating a high oxidation potential that naturally prevents bacterial colonisation.
Unlike sand filters, AFM® does not allow bacteria to form biofilms, eliminating the risk of bacterial contamination and clogging. With its electro-static surface charge, AFM® efficiently traps and removes fine particles, organic matter, and dissolved pollutants, ensuring superior water quality.

What Are the Problems of Biofilm in My Swimming Pool?
1. Inconsistent and Unreliable Filtration
After 6 – 12 months, biofilm develops on traditional sand filter media, causing clumping and channeling in the filter bed. This allows unfiltered water to pass through, reducing filtration performance and putting bathers at risk.
AFM® Solution: Filtration performance remains predictable, reliable, and stable. With no biofilm formation, AFM® ensures 100% filtered water reaches your pool.
2. Pathogens & Bacteria Growth
Sand filters often become a breeding ground for harmful pathogens like Legionella and Pseudomonas. Over time, bacteria flocs can break through the filter and contaminate the pool water.
AFM® Solution: AFM® prevents bacterial growth and transmission, ensuring safer, healthier pool water with minimal pathogen risk.
3. Trichloramine & Chlorine Smell
Sweat and urine introduced into the pool contain 80% urea. In a sand filter, bacteria in the biofilm convert urea into ammonia, which reacts with chlorine to form chloramines—especially trichloramine (NCl3). This chemical is highly volatile, causing:
- Strong chlorine odor
- Eye, skin, and lung irritation
- Poor air quality around the pool
AFM® Solution: With no biofilm formation, AFM® prevents the conversion of urea into ammonia. The result? No biofilm = No trichloramine = No chlorine smell!
