When it comes to swimming pool chemicals, chlorine is the most popular for sanitising your water. Whether you want to use tablets, granules or liquid chlorine, these products maintain the cleanliness of your pool, kill bacteria and keep the water safe to swim in. Without using pool chlorine, your water would quickly become dirty, with contaminants introduced into the water via swimmers and the surrounding environment.
The two most commonly used chlorine forms are granules and tablets. Each has its own benefits, but they still do the same job at the end of the day. Chlorine granules provide a particularly convenient method for dosing your pool water, as you can easily adjust the dosage depending on your needs and the pool’s volume. The ‘stabilised’ element of the product means it includes a stabiliser to protect against chlorine loss to the sun.
If chlorine granules do not contain a stabiliser (i.e. cyanuric acid), they are more likely to be less effective and won’t hold up as well against UV rays. Buying stabilised chlorine granules or tablets means you won’t have to add the cyanuric acid separately.
The ideal range for chlorine in pool water is 1-3 ppm, so you should aim to maintain this on a weekly basis. Exactly how much swimming pool chlorine you’ll require and how often you’ll need to re-dose your pool will depend on several factors, including the size of your pool and the frequency of use.
If you have a larger pool, liquid chlorine may be the better option for you. Liquid chlorine pool chemicals can also provide effective shock treatments as they’re fast-acting and can be easily added to your water.
