About the Blue Lagoon UV-C System
UV-C is one of the simplest upgrades you can make to a pool. Water from your filter runs through a stainless steel chamber past a UV-C lamp, and the light kills bacteria, viruses, algae and fungi on the way through, including chlorine-resistant bugs like Cryptosporidium. Nothing is added to the water and you can't overdose it.
What you notice is the water. It's clearer and fresher, with much less of that chlorine smell, because UV-C also breaks down the bonded chlorine (chloramines) that cause it, along with red eyes and itchy skin. You'll still need some chlorine in the pool, but Blue Lagoon say you can cut your usage by up to 80%.
The reactor is made from 316L stainless steel, which reflects the UV-C light back into the water and boosts its effect by up to 35%. An electronic ballast keeps the lamp running at its best.
The 40W, 75W and 130W Timer models have a digital countdown that tracks your lamp's hours and starts flashing four weeks before it's due for replacement, so you never end up running a lamp that's past its best. The 130W amalgam model also has a flow switch that turns the lamp off automatically if the water stops flowing.

*Recommended flow gives a UV dose of 30 mJ/cm², the level generally used for pool disinfection. If your pump pushes more than this, consider the next size up.
Warranty
Blue Lagoon UV-C units come with a 2 year warranty against production defects. The UV-C lamp and quartz sleeve are wearing parts and will need replacing over time. The unit must be correctly earthed and plugged into a socket protected by an RCD, and it shouldn't be installed after a chlorine doser, pH controller or salt chlorinator. Frequently asked questions
Do I still need chlorine with a UV-C system?
Yes, but a lot less. UV-C only treats the water as it passes through the unit, so you still need a small chlorine residual in the pool itself. Because the UV does most of the heavy lifting, Blue Lagoon say you can cut chlorine use by up to 80%, and the water smells and feels much nicer.
Which Blue Lagoon UV-C size do I need?
Start with your pool volume: 16W for spas up to 15 m³, 40W for pools up to 35 m³, 75W up to 70 m³ and 130W up to 130 m³. Then check your pump's flow. Each unit has a recommended flow (11, 16 or 22 m³/h), and if your pump runs faster than that, go up a size so the water gets a full dose.
Where should the UV-C unit be installed?
The best place is straight after the filter. It must go before any chlorine doser, pH controller or salt chlorinator, never after them. Mount it out of direct sunlight in a dry, ventilated spot, with water flowing bottom to top, and leave 1 m clear at the lamp end so you can change the lamp later.
How often does the lamp need replacing?
The 40W and 75W lamps last 9,000 hours, which is about a year of 24-hour running. The 130W amalgam lamp lasts 16,000 hours. The countdown timer on the Timer models starts flashing four weeks before the lamp is due, then more quickly at two weeks and one week.
Can I use a Blue Lagoon UV-C on a salt water pool?
These stainless steel units aren't suitable for salt water pools. Call us and we'll suggest an alternative.
Does every model have a timer?
No. The 40W, 75W and 130W Timer models have the digital lamp countdown. The 16W spa unit doesn't, so you'll need to keep track of the lamp hours yourself.
How do I look after it?
Clean the unit at least twice a year. Switch off the power, drain it, then carefully remove the lamp and quartz sleeve and wipe the sleeve with a soft cloth and a suitable cleaner. Wear gloves and glasses, as the quartz is delicate. If you have hard water or algae, you may need to clean it more often.
